What is ODD?
- Behaviour Support
- Emotional Regulation
- Family Guidance
ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder) is a behavioural and emotional condition characterised by a persistent pattern of anger, frustration, and defiant behaviour, particularly towards authority figures such as parents, teachers, or caregivers.
It is important to understand that ODD is not simply “bad behaviour.” It often reflects underlying difficulties with emotional regulation, frustration tolerance, and coping skills.
How ODD May Present
Children with ODD may show:
Emotional Reactivity
- Frequent anger or irritability
- Easily frustrated or upset
- Difficulty calming down once distressed
Â
Defiant Behaviour
- Arguing with adults
- Refusing to follow rules or requests
- Deliberately doing the opposite of what is asked
Â
Social Challenges
- Blaming others for mistakes
- Being easily annoyed by others
- Struggling with peer relationships
Â
Beyond Behaviour: What’s Happening Underneath?
ODD is often linked to challenges in:
- Emotional regulation
- Managing stress and frustration
- Interpreting social situations
In many cases, these behaviours are a way of communicating unmet needs or feeling overwhelmed, rather than intentional opposition.
ODD can also co-occur with conditions such as ADHD, where difficulties with impulse control and regulation may contribute to behavioural responses.
Strengths to Build On
Children with ODD can also have strong qualities, such as:
- Determination and persistence
- Strong sense of fairness
- Independence and assertiveness
With the right guidance, these traits can be channelled positively.

Why Early Support Matters
Without support, ongoing conflict can affect:
- Family relationships
- School experience
- Self-esteem
Early understanding helps children develop:
- Emotional regulation skills
- Positive communication strategies
- Healthier ways to respond to challenges

Our Approach
At Neuro-SEED, we look beyond behaviour to understand the underlying emotional and neurological needs.
We work with children and families to:
- Build regulation and coping skills
- Strengthen relationships
- Create consistent, supportive environments
Our approach is compassionate, structured, and tailored to each child, helping them move from frustration to confidence.
ADHD and ODD can sometimes occur together, and understanding both allows for a more holistic and effective approach to support.
