What is ADHD?
- ADHD Brain Support
- Focus & Attention
- Early Intervention
ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how the brain manages attention, behaviour, and self-regulation.
It is not about intelligence or effort—individuals with ADHD often have the ability to succeed, but may experience challenges with focus, organisation, and impulse control.
ADHD can look different in each individual, but commonly includes:
Inattention
- Difficulty sustaining focus
- Easily distracted
- Forgetting tasks or instructions
- Struggling with organisation
Hyperactivity
- Restlessness or constant movement
- Difficulty staying still
- Talking excessively
Impulsivity
- Acting without thinking
- Interrupting others
- Difficulty waiting or taking turns
Different Types of ADHD
ADHD is typically grouped into three presentations:
- Predominantly Inattentive (more focus-related difficulties)
- Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive
- Combined Type (a mix of both)
Beyond Behaviour: What’s Happening in the Brain?
ADHD is linked to differences in brain networks responsible for:
- Attention and focus
- Executive functioning (planning, organisation)
- Emotional regulation
These differences can make everyday tasks feel more demanding—but they also mean the brain works in a unique and often creative way.
Strengths in ADHD
Many individuals with ADHD also show strengths such as:
- Creativity and original thinking
- High energy and enthusiasm
- Ability to think quickly and adapt
- Strong focus on areas of interest (hyperfocus)
Why Early Understanding Matters
Recognising ADHD early allows for:
- Better support at home and school
- Improved confidence and self-esteem
- Development of effective coping strategies
With the right support, individuals with ADHD can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
